Roger Federer finally lifted the elusive French Open Men’s Singles title at Roland Garros, defeating giant-killer Robin Soderling 6-1, 7-6 (1), 6-4. With this victory Federer became only the sixth player in the history of tennis to achieve a career Grand Slam. He also equaled Pete Sampras’ record for the most number of Grand slam titles.
In the Women’s draw, Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Dinara Safina in an all-Russian final. For the second consecutive year, Safina succumbed to nerves at the finals and Kuznetsova beat the erratic and inconsistent World No.1 in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
The Men’s double was won by Leander Paes and Lukas Dlouhy, who came back from a set down to defeat Wesley Moodie and Dick Norman 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues and Virginia Ruano Pascual crushed Victoria Azarenka Elena Vesnina 6–1, 6–1 in the Women’s doubles finals.
