Spanish League giants Barcelona thrashed Manchester United 2-0 in the much-awaited clash of the titans at the UEFA Champions League finals to become the first club in Spain to win the treble of La Liga, King’s Cup, and European Cup.
United started off confidently in the match played at Stadio Olimpico in Rome in front of 72,698 spectators. But things started to fall apart after Samuel Eto’o opened the scoring for Barcelona in the tenth minute.
There after it was Barcelona all the way, with Xavi and Andres Iniesta completely dominating the midfield. Lionel Messi effectively sealed off the contest with a stunning header with 20 minutes remaining.
Sir Alex Fergusson, Manchester United’s manager, tried everything, including replacing Ryan Giggs with Paul Scholes. But nothing could break the stranglehold that Barca had and at the final whistle, Barcelona were crowned the worthy champions. “We didn’t play as well as we can but you have to give Barcelona credit,” admitted Sir Fergusson.
The Red Devils Captain Ryan Giggs echoed a similar sentiment when he said “…credit to them, they deserved it”. Even the most loyal Manchester United fan would not disagree with that.
