The stage was up for one of the most exciting matches in tennis history. The men’s singles final was to be held at the Centre Court lawn in Wimbledon, on the 5th of July. The 2009 Championships clash was played between Andy Roddick and Roger Federer who had earlier equaled Sampras’ mark of 14 Grand Slam wins at the French Open in June. A grueling match that lasted over four hours saw the longest fifth set in a Wimbledon final. Finally Federer clinched a 5-7, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, 16-14 victory, which is his sixth Wimbledon title. Overlooked by all-time greats and former Wimbledon champions, Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, and Pete Sampras, Roger Federer rewrote tennis history as the first player with the most Grand Slam titles.
