McLaren Claims Yet Another 1-2 Finish in Montreal

Posted on 14 June 2010 by Andrew

After two years of lay-off, Formula 1 returned to Montreal, Canada this weekend. Lewis Hamilton led team mate Jenson Button home in McLaren’s third 1-2 finish of the season. Ferrari driver and two time world champion Fernando Alonso finished third. Lewis now leads the drivers’ championship ahead of fellow countryman and team mate Jenson Button.

It was the most exciting race so far this season, as drama started unfolding immediately after the start of the race when Ferrari’s Massa and Force India’s Liuzzi collided at the first corner, making both the drivers pit early in the race. It was all about tire selection as it was the warmest day of the week and track temperature was up to 38 degrees. Both the Red Bull drivers struggled for grip as their tires degraded more quickly than those of McLaren and Ferrari.

Lewis, who made a brilliant start, converted it to a race victory through a very good tire selection and sensible driving. Webber, who looked good for a race victory at one stage, suffered a tire degradation and dropped down to finish fifth. His team mate Sebastian Vettel completed the race fourth as he was asked to turn down engine revs by Red Bull’s engineers due to a mechanical issue.

It was a good weekend for Force India as both the cars of the team finished in point-scoring positions. If the early incident involving McLaren Claims Yet Another 1-2 Finish in MontrealMassa had not happened, Liuzzi would have been in a better position at the end of the race.

The championship standings after the Canadian GP are:

1. Lewis Hamilton – 109
2. Jenson Button – 106
3. Mark Webber – 103
4. Fernando Alonso – 94
5. Sebastian Vettel – 90
6. Nico Rosberg – 74
7. Robert Kubica – 73
8. Felipe Massa – 67
9. Michael Schumacher – 34
10. Adrian Sutil- 23
